No question the Detroit series 50 once dominated the market due to its ability to work on different applications such as buses, construction machinery, military vehicles, and other heavy-duty.
After using the engine for some years you may need to overhaul it especially when you notice the following signs;
1. Increase oil consumption
2. Poor efficiency
3. Frequent repairs on the engine
4. Damaged to major components such as crankshaft.
When you see the above symptoms, you should know that you need to overhaul the engine.
But another question you need to ask is; what components should be replaced during the overhauling:
1. Complete overhauling gasket: it will be better for you to buy a complete overhauling gasket that comprises all the gaskets including the head gasket, timing cover gasket, and other gasket. It is cheaper to buy the overhauling gasket than to buy that gaskets individually. At ProDieselParts, we carry both the complete gasket sets and the individual gaskets.
2. Main and connecting rod bearings: These are the other must-changed components. The bearings protect the crankshaft by providing a smooth surface for the crankshaft to rotate. When the bearings are worn, it will cause a serious injury to the crankshaft. So during overhauling, it must be replaced.
3. Complete cylinder overhauling: You also need to overhaul the cylinder head which includes replacing the valves and the valve seals. You also need to do cylinder head resurfacing to keep the surface smooth.
4. The oil seals: you must replace the front and rear oil seals to prevent oil leakages after overhauling.
5. Piston Rings: The piston rings ensure that the compression does not leak downward, so during overhauling, you must replace the piston rings to enjoy maximum compression.
6. The piston: Although the piston may sometimes look good, during the overhauling, you must replace the piston to have adequate compression sealing.
7. Sleeve: Another name for it is liner. Please replace the sleeve during overhauling.
8. Connecting rod: The connecting rod may still look good, but during overhauling, replace all the connecting rods.
9. Injectors are optional: You need to take the injectors to the specialist to check if they will still be used or need to be replaced.
10. All the filters: These include the oil filter, fuel, and air filter.
Note: You don’t need to replace the crankshaft, but you need to check the crankshaft.
