What is the Difference Between the Mack E7 and E7 E-Tech Engine?

on

Mack E7 is one of the most popular truck engines made by Mack. It is mostly used in trucks and other applications. However, the E7 model of Mack can be divided into a mechanical type or an electronic engine called the E-Tech.

In the below article, let us compare and contrast these two engines.

1. One of the notable differences between the two engines is the injection pump. The mechanical E7 Mack uses an inline injection pump. This type of injection pump uses a plunger. The injection pump supplies the fuel to all the 6 cylinders through the plungers.

Meanwhile, the E7 E-Tech uses an electronic control injection pump. This injection pump is a single pump. Each cylinder has a pump that supplies each injector. This injection has a coil attached to it that makes it electronically controlled by the current of the ECU. The pump is called an electronic pump unit (EPU).

2. The camshaft is another difference between the two engines. The Mack E7 and E7 E-Tech have different camshafts. The E-Tech camshaft is modified in such a way as to maximize fuel and control the rate of emissions.

3. The water pump is also different. These engines use a lookalike water pump, but looking at it closely, you will notice a difference. Purchase the correct waterpump for your Mack E7 with ProDieselParts.

4. Another difference is that the E7 E-Tech is an upgraded version of the E7. Two areas in which the E-Tech has advantages over the E7 are:

  • a. Fuel efficiency: Due to the way the camshaft  and piston were designed, the E7 E-Tech was able to be more fuel efficient than the conventional E7.
  • b. Horsepower to weight ratio: Comparing the horsepower, the E7 E-Tech has a higher horsepower, which is rated between 360 – 500 horsepower, which is higher than the E7, which is 250 – 400 horsepower.

5. The cylinder head: The cylinder head is also different from each other. This is due to different injectors. There was a debate about whether the cylinder head could be used interchangeably. The answer is no. The E7 E-Tech cylinder head is different from the normal E7.

6. The head gasket is another component that makes these two engines different. There is a head gasket built for E7 E-Tech due to the differences in the combustion system. Meanwhile, the conventional E7 has a different head gasket built for it due to its own combustion system.

7. The piston and the liners are also different. To my surprise, the E7 E-Tech has both dry and wet sleeves. In case you come across a wet liner in your E7 E-Tech, you should not be surprised to see another with dry liners.

These are some notable differences between the two engines.
