Caterpilar engine are one of the leading manufacturers of ACERT engines. After the Cat manufactured 3406E, people were thrilled to see how smooth the engine was. But in no time, the C15 came up which is an upgrade to 3406E and the two engines share some similarities.

EPA(Environmental Pollution Agency) is really on the neck of all engine manufacturers to comply with the stringent new emissions policies made by EPA.
It is on this account that Caterpillar’s engine decided to move ahead by producing an engine labeled ACERT.
These ACERT engines are normal but are more compliant with emissions policies. No wonder such engines are used in oilfields where emissions are not tolerated.
ACERT engine can control the accuracy of fuel injection to the combustion chamber with more precision than other engines.
It means the timing of fuel injection to the combustion must be exact when it is needed. The ability to control the fuel timing and combustion helps to reduce the emissions rate.
Another aspect of the ACERT engine we need to look into is the two turbos. Unlike in other Cat engines, ACERT Cat engines use two turbo. But the turbos are not twins because one is bigger than the other one. The smaller one is referred to as a high-pressure turbo while the bigger turbo is referred to as a low-pressure turbo.
The smaller turbo receives the exhaust gas before the bigger one because it is directly attached to the exhaust manifold. When the exhaust gas leaves the smaller turbo, it goes to the bigger turbo before it finally exits the engine. However, you need to note that the intake filter is attached to the bigger turbo before the air is transferred to the smaller turbo which is referred to as high-pressure turbo.
All these efforts are to lower the emissions rate.
Another component in the ACERT engine that is worth mentioning is the pre-cooler.
The function of the pre-cooler is to cool the temperature of the air before going into the engine. When air is compressed, then the temperature will naturally be increased, so with the help of a pre-cooler the temperature of the air usually comes down. In the Cat ACERT engine, the pre-cooler is water-to-air cooling, not air-to-air cooling.
No doubt Cat ACERT engines are really environmentally friendly, it promises a cleaner future.
So whenever you see ACERT on any Cat engine it means the engine is in compliance with EPA, and can be used wherever emissions are not allowed.
