Frequently Asked Questions About the Detroit Diesel 6-92 Engine

on

Detroit Diesel 6-92 series is one of the most used Detroit engines. There are a series of questions about the engine.
Here are the commonly asked questions about the engine;

1. Is 6-92 a turbocharged engine?

The answer is no. The engine is not a turbocharged engine; it is a naturally aspirated engine. Although the engine has a root blower, that never makes it a turbocharged engine. Why?
The major function of the blower is not the same as the turbo or supercharger. The blower doesn’t compress the air as much as a turbocharger.
Therefore, 6-92 is a naturally aspirated engine, not a forced induction engine.

2. What does 6-92 stand for?

The 6 stands for 6 cylinders. It means the engine is a 6-cylinder. If there is a letter V after the 6, then it means the engine is a V-engine configuration. But when there is no V, it means the engine is in a straight configuration.

3. What is the common problem with the 6-92?

 Two major common problems with this engine:
One of them is oil leaks. The oil leaks usually occur from the valve cover gasket. The second problem is that the engine is very loud.

4. What is the displacement of the engine?

6-92 is a big engine with a displacement of 9.5 litre which is about 552 cubic inches. It is on this note it was regarded as one of the most powerful engines made by Detroit diesel engine.

5. What applications can 6-92 be used for?

Due to the rugged nature of the engine, the engine can be used in different applications such as generators, buses, marine, and other construction equipment.

6. What maintenance schedule should be meant for the  6-92?

As the engine is running, there should be regularly scheduled maintenance that must be in place such as;

  • a. Regular oil change every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or you can also use hours which should be between 250 to 300 working hours.
  • b. Valve adjustment should be part of the maintenance schedule, and it should take place at every 100,000 miles.
  • c. Replacement of the oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter should also be included in the scheduled maintenance and it should be done regularly.
7. What is the life span of a 6-92 Detroit diesel engine?

Detroit Diesel 6-92 series is a 2-stroke engine that produces power at every revolution. However, that makes it have a shorter lifespan compared to a 4-stroke engine that produces power at every 2 crankshaft revolution.

Therefore, the 6-92 Detroit diesel Lifespan is 500,000 miles or above. However, you should also know that the lifespan of an engine can be prolonged by adequate maintenance.

8. Should you mix oil and fuel for a 6-92 two-stroke engine?

The answer is no. This engine has a separate tank for oil and fuel. Although it is a 2-stroke engine, the oil and fuel are not mixed together.

In most 2-stroke diesel engines, the fuel and oil are meant to be separate, unlike in other smaller petrol 2-stroke engines such as chainsaws, where the oil and fuel are mixed.

9. What is the horsepower of the engine 6-92 DD?

The horsepower of the engine ranges between 253 and 335. The horsepower depends on the rpm of the engine. While the torque of the engine is about 746 to 1, 087 lb-ft.

10. What kind of fuel system does the 6-92 use?

The engine uses unit system injectors. This means each cylinder has an injection pump that supplies each cylinder. The injection and injectors are together.
