Frequently Asked Questions About the Detroit Diesel 6-71 Engine

on
1. What is the injector number for the 6-71 Detroit diesel engine?

The following numbers of injectors can work with 6-71; N65, N70, and N75. These are the injectors that can work with this engine.

You need to avoid using lower injectors so that the efficiency of the engine will not be compromised.

The Injector’s numbers are written on the injectors.

2. Is 6-71 a 2 or 4-valve engine?

There are different versions of the 6-71 engine. There is a version with 2 valves, and there is also another version with 4 valves.

The version depends on the configuration of the engine. The cylinder could be a configuration of 2 valves, which are one intake and one exhaust. While the 4 valves configuration means 2 intake valves and 2 exhaust valves.

3. What is the difference between 6-71 C- injectors and N- injectors?

The difference is their spraying patterns. Most 6-71 injectors are written N on it. However, there are still some models in which C was written on it.

The C injectors are more emissions control injectors than the N. For example, some country or states demands C injectors for emissions control.

However, the N injectors are more powerful than the C injectors. That is why the N injectors are mostly used in off-highway applications.
While the C injectors are mostly used for on-highway applications.

4. How many cylinders does 6-71 have?

The 6 that preceded the 71 indicated that the engine was a 6-cylinder engine. While the 71 is the series of the engine or the family to which the engine belongs.

5. What type of oil should be used in a 6-71?

The engine is a 2-stroke engine; the recommended oil is SAE 30.

Although some still use SAE 40, the engine will still run well. But the DD manufacturer recommends oil to be SAE 30.

The viscosity of the oil matters a lot to the well-being of the engine. Using the wrong oil can cause damage to the engine

– A high-detergent, heavy-duty engine oil with a viscosity typically recommended by the manufacturer, usually around SAE 30.

6. What does blue smoke from a 6-71 indicate?

If you are having blue smoke in your 6-71, it is a sign of oil burning. It means that the oil is getting to the combustion chamber due to bad piston rings or other means. So blue smoke is a sign of oil burning.

7. What does white smoke from a 6-71 indicate?

White smoke is a result of coolant in the combustion chamber. It means the coolant is burning, which is why the engine is emitting white smoke.
Incorrect injector settings could also be the cause for that.

8. What is the difference between 6-71 and 6-71T

There could be some minor differences between the two engines, but the major difference is the turbocharger. The 6-71T means the engine has a turbo. The T means turbocharger.
But the one without T means it has a blower.

9. What is the horsepower range of 6-71?

The horsepower ranges between 190 to 300 HP. The horsepower varies according to the rpm of the engine and the configuration of the engine.

For example, the 6-71T is a turbocharged engine, which possesses more power due to the force induction of the turbo.

10. When should I adjust the valve on the engine?

You should follow the manufacturer’s direction on when to adjust the valve, but after 10,000 miles, you should readjust the valves. This should be done as part of schedule maintenance.
