Valve adjustment is one of the key procedures you need to know to repair your engine. If the valves are not properly adjusted, the engine will malfunction; in fact, it can even cause the engine to have power loss.
How to adjust the valves on the Mack E6 engine:
Please follow the following Prompts;
The first thing is that you need to understand the firing order of the engine. The firing for the Mack E6 engine is; 1-5-3-6-2-4.
- After knowing the firing order, the next thing is to open the valve cover. You need to rotate the engine manually not with the ignition key. You can do so from the flywheel or the crankshaft at the crankshaft pulley. You need to rotate the engine until cylinder #1 is at TDC (Top Dead Center) on the compression stroke. At this point, the intake and exhaust valves are in a closed position, so you can adjust the valve.
*Follow the manufacturer’s manual instructions on the feeler gauge number to use.
- The next step is to rotate the engine until cylinder #5 is on TDC on the compression stroke. Then you adjust both the intake and the exhaust valves.
- Going back to the firing order the next step is to adjust cylinder #3. As you did before, you need to rotate the engine until you get the TDC on the compression stroke. Then use the feeler gauge to adjust the valves according to service manual instructions.
- The next valve to adjust is cylinder #6. So you have to rotate the engine until cylinder #6 is on the compression stroke, which means the intakes and exhaust valves are closed. Then you need to adjust the valves accordingly.
- Next on the order is cylinder #2. You need to rotate the engine as usual until the cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. Then you adjust the valve.
- The last cylinder to adjust is cylinder #4. As you rotate the engine, when you have gotten the compression stroke on cylinder #4, adjust both the intake and exhaust valves.
Note: When rotating the engine, you need to do it according to the engine direction, either clockwise or counterclockwise.
*You should also remember that there is a difference between compression stroke and exhaust stroke. To identify the compression stroke, you can use an injection pump when it has supplied the very cylinder you want to adjust through the pressure pipe.
The valve lashes to use are mostly written on the engine plate. The named plate can be found on the valve cover or the engine body.
These are simple steps you can follow to adjust the valves on the E6 Mack engine.
