Common Problems and Solutions for the Caterpillar 3512 Engine

on

The 3512 Cat is a very big and old engine. This engine is used in many applications but mostly in generators. This article will talk about the common problems found in this engine and how to troubleshoot them. If you’re looking to purchase parts to repair your CAT 3512 engine, go to ProDieselParts.

1. Coolant overflowing from the radiator:  One of the common problems in the CAT 3512 is coolant overflowing from the radiator. This problem is caused by engine overheating.  Overheating can cause the head gasket to blow, and coolant to then leak from the radiator. It is not a matter that the head gasket is a weak point in this engine, but when the temperature of the engine is higher than what it can handle, then the head gasket gives away.

Therefore the solution is to prevent overheating. Ensure the temperature gauge is intact so that it can shut down the engine when the temperature becomes abnormal.

2. Vibration during operation: Vibration is another common problem found in the CAT 3512.
Air in the fuel line can cause this engine to vibrate.
The first thing to do to solve this issue is to remove air by bleeding the fuel line.
If the problem persists, you should also check the fuel, injection pump, or injectors. But your major focus should be on the fuel line.

3. Low fuel pressure:  The CAT 3512 engine runs with high fuel pressure; the pressure should be between 65 to 70. Whenever the fuel pressure drops, the engine will shut down. Also, ensure to replace the fuel filter. A clogged fuel filter will restrict the flow of fuel which leads to fuel pressure drops. After replacing the fuel filter, if the problem persists, then you would need to check the fuel pump.

4. Black smoke under load: Black smoke in the CAT 3512 is mostly common if the engine is used as a generator. Black smoke is a result of unburnt fuel. When the engine is under load, the injectors inject more fuel which must be burned. But if the fuel is not properly burned, it will create black smoke.

Bad injectors could be a reason for having unburnt fuel because if these injectors are dropping instead of injecting, then the engine will not be able to burn such fuel. The fuel can even go down to the sump, turning the oil into sludge, which causes damage to the engine.

These are the most common problems and solutions found in the CAT 3512 engine. ProDieselParts carries all the components necessary to fix and keep your CAT 3512 engine running.
