Common Problems and Solutions For the CAT D397 Engine

on

The CAT D397 is an old engine that is seriously facing out. One of the biggest problems encountered on these old engines is oil leaks. The Caterpillar D397 is a diesel engine found in heavy machinery, such as generators and construction equipment, and other industrial uses.It may develop a host of problems from wear and tear, poor maintenance, or environmental factors.

Here are some common problems with the Caterpillar D397 engine and their potential solutions:

Oil Leaks: An oil leak can happen as a result of a clogged crankcase vent. This allows pressure to build in the crankcase which causes the oil to escape through any leeway.

However, in case you have such a problem, you can also do well to check the oil slinger if it has worn. A worn oil slinger could also be the reason why you are having oil leaks.

So what could cause the crankcase vent to clogged?

  • a. Oil sludge: When you have oil sludge which can form as a result of blowby, the blowby smoke with time usually comes out with oil, and such oil turns into sludge with time.
  • b. Damaged PVC valve: The valve ensures that the crankcase pressure is dissipated out of the engine. But when the valve is bad, it allows the blowby to build pressure which leads to excessive pressure in the crankcase.

Engine Overheating: Some symptoms of your D397 engine overheating are high coolant temperature, your engine shutting down, or loss of power. You would need to check for thermostat, or water pump failure, low coolant level, and blocked radiator. Always inspect for worn parts and replace them when needed.

Fuel System Failure: Fuel failure on your D397 can lead to complete engine failure, rough idling, and poor fuel efficiency. Some issues that cause fuel system failure are clogged or worn injectors, fuel contamination, and fuel pump failure. To avoid this make regular changes to your fuel filters, inspect for leaks, and clean your fuel injectors. You can also install fuel/water separators to prevent contamination.
