How to Install Sleeve for Detroit Diesel Series 50 without a Tool

During overhauling your Series 50 Engine, you may need to install the sleeve in the cylinder bore. Detroit 50 series is a 4-stroke engine with wet sleeve. Wet sleeve simply means, there is direct contact with the coolant. So in most cases the sleeve is usually thicker than a dry sleeve. To install the sleeve you need to put the liner rubber on the sleeve. In Detroit series 50 the liner has about 3 rubbers, so you need to ensure that you put the rubber on the liner without any of it twist. Note: if you allow the rubber to twist, during the installation the rubber will cut.
Another point of note is whether to put sealant gum on the rubber or not. Well, it is a personal decision but if you buy a quality liner seal, you don’t need a sealant gum. A quality liner seal is sufficient to prevent coolant leakages to sump.
After proper installation of the liner seal, you need to install the sleeve in the cylinder bore.
Don’t forget to clean the bore, ensure there is no foreign objects or particles in the cylinder bore.
If you have a sleeve installer, you can make use of it. But if you don’t have let me share with a simpler method to install the sleeve:
1Put the sleeve on the cylinder bore, ensure that the piston does not tilt to any side let it remain balanced.
Then look for a thicker wood, cross it at the center of the sleeve. Then use a hammer that is a bit heavy to hit the wood.
Gradually, you will see the sleeve going inside the bore until it levels with the deck of the engine block.
If you’re afraid that the sleeve will break, the answer is no, it will not. The wet sleeve is always thick.
Note: Should you apply lubricant on the wall of the bore or on the liner?
The answer is no. Sometimes the oil may have a negative react on liner rubber which can damage the liner rubber.
That is how you are going to install the four sleeves of Detroit series 50.
