SHOULD YOU REPLACE THE COMPLETE WATER PUMP OR ONLY THE IMPELLER- ProDieselParts

When you start having high temperatures,  noise from the water pump, or coolant leakages from the water pump weephole, then you should know that you have to do something about the water pump.
However, you are confronted with this vital question;
Should you change the whole water pump or only the impeller?
Hope reading this article will surely be of help to you.

The first factor you need to consider is the lifespan of the water pump. The lifespan of the water pump varies from one engine to another, but you can check the owner’s manual to know your water pump’s expectancy lifespan.
In heavy-duty engine, a water pump can normally serve you for up to 10 years. Going by mile it can cover 60,000 to 100,000.
If you calculate that your water pump has served you up to that number of years or miles, then you need to replace the complete water pump.
Because at that point all the components that make up the water pump have wear, thus you would need to replace the complete water pump, not the impeller.

But in a situation where you want to work on the water pump because you are doing engine Overhauling then you can replace only the impeller or the water kit.

The water pump kit also includes the mechanical seal and the ball bearing.
During the engine Overhauling, you can also work on the water pump to avoid any major repairs after the overhauling

You can also decide to replace the kit or impeller if the water pump is damaged before it expires lifespan. In such a situation, the water pump can be repaired.

After replacing the bearing, the water pump can still function for a number of years after.
Another factor that will determine whether to replace only the impeller or the complete water pump is the extent of the damage to the water pump.
These are the major components that make up a water pump;
1. The impeller
2. The bearing
3. The mechanical seal
4. The impeller shaft.
5. The water pump housing.

If the damages to the water pump involved other components but the housing is good, then you can re-kit the water pump without changing the hole water pump.

But if for any reason, the water pump housing was affected, then you need to replace the complete water pump.
